Many, many years ago, the universe we know today only consisted of 12 beings and the omnipotent hand that controlled them. They were the original warriors, hailing from different lands to come together for a battle royale of the ages. The hand, whom they dubbed "Master Hand," guided these few in a time of peaceful skirmishes between these great warriors in a place they did not know the true origins of.
Over time, the universe grew larger and more warriors joined the fray, summoned forth by Master Hand's... eccentric brother, Crazy Hand. Master was not so pleased with his brother's unannounced expanding of his little world. Crazy Hand was a clever one, though, and managed to convince Master Hand to let the new fighters stay.
Crazy proposed that he and Master split the fighters, one group fighting for Master, and the other for Crazy. Whoevers group won, that hand would control the universe, "Smash," until the next tournament. The most elite fighter of the winning team were also given the choice of returning to their home should they desire it. Intrigued, Master agreed and the first Smash Brothers tournament was organized.
From then on, the brothers traded power over the universe back and forth. The Smash universe expanded, taking small snippets from the world's the fighters hailed from and forming small islands, called "stages." It was a peaceful time for all, until mysterious new object entered the battle royale.
The Smash Ball. A ball of seemingly limitless energy that granted the fighters the ability to perform devastating attacks.
The Hands were puzzled. What was this new entity in their universe? The brothers deliberated over what it could mean until another fighter suddenly appeared without any influence from the Hands. Something strange was going on, but their fighters continued on with their daily lives, unaware of the forces changing their new homes.
With each tournament, the energy generated fed into the source of the Hands' power, the Master Core. The Core was becoming overloaded and needed to release its energy, lest Smash be completely annihilated. Thus, the Smash Ball was used for this purpose. One fighter, a powerful psychic, soon found out the source of the Smash Ball's mysterious ability and went about hoarding it.
The fighter wanted to be the controlling force in the Smash universe and, with the energy of the Master Core, he commited the greatest taboo of all.
He overthrew the Hands.
The energy of the Core was too much for him, though. It corrupted him and turned him into an all-powerful entity the other Smashers decided to call "Tabuu" for what he did.
Dark times soon befell the Smash universe. Tabuu manipulated the Hands themselves and spread his own dark energy across the universe. The fighters banded together to stop this new threat and restore peace to Smash. It was a long, hard fought war. Tabuu was a powerful enemy and the energy of the Master Core gave him near infinite power.
Amazingly, the Smashers pulled through and defeated Tabuu.
And now here we are, rebuilding what we had lost in the war with Tabuu. The Hands, once restored as top dogs in Smash, allowed any fighter who wished to leave and return home do so. Some left, but most stayed. They had fought too hard and long to give it all up in the end. Smash was their home.
Life as been returning to normal in Smash. The tournament is starting up again and the Hands are back to their power struggle. We Smashers live day to day, but I sense growing tensions. There are bad omens all around us.
I fear our hardships are not over yet.
